USA Today reports, a couple of flight attendants and six passengers were brought to hospitals when a Cathay Pacific Airways Boeing 747 encoutered major turbulence Feb. 18 when cruising over Japan. Also the day before once again three flight attendants and two passengers were injured on United Airlines when the aircraft hit another major turbulence tossing passengers from their seats.
The facts about turbulence:
1. About 58 people are injured every year in the United States because they don't wear their seat belts.
2. From 1980 through 2008, U.S. air carriers had 234 turbulence accidents, resulting in 298 serious injuries and 3 fatalities.
3. Of the 298 serious injuries, 184 involved flight attendants and 114 involved passengers.
4. At least 2 of the three people whose deaths were turbulence related were not wearing their seat belts when the turbulence occured, even though the fasten-seat-belt sign was iluminated at the time.
